Lower School

At Mason Prep, you will discover a nurturing environment that encourages students, faculty, and families to work and learn as a team. Our philosophy promotes not only strong academics but also the development of the whole child. We stress citizenship, personal responsibility, and respect for self and others. Continuously, life lessons are an integral part of our curriculum. It is our belief that education and building self-esteem go hand-in-hand.

At the same time that our students grow and learn, they also prepare for the next step in their academic careers. The wonderful news about our program is that at the end of eight years, our students are well-prepared for the high school of their choice!

The basics are stressed in all academic areas. The SRA Open Court Reading is phonetically based, allowing children with different learning modalities to succeed. Along with phonics, there is a strong emphasis on comprehension skills. Our traditional math program, Scott Foresman-Addison Wesley Mathematics, incorporates the use of manipulatives, strategies, and problem-solving techniques. This program has the added benefit of being accessible online. The Language Arts program emphasizes grammar through creative writing, spelling, book talks, journals, and pen pal communications. In Social Studies, students are exposed to a variety of skills, concepts, and history. The lower school science teacher provides a hands-on learning environment. Our foreign language program is dedicated to exposing children to other cultures and languages.
