Physical Education

Physical activity is critical to the development and maintenance of good health. The goal of the Mason Prep physical education program is to develop educated individuals who have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activity.

A quality PE program consists of four critical elements:

• opportunity to learn
• meaningful content
• appropriate instruction
• student and program assessment

Included within these elements are problem solving, social interaction, social expectations, competition and cooperation, and safety skills and habits.

There are three main objectives of PE:

• Psychomotor: the dual role of skill improvement and fitness development
• Cognitive: the accumulation of knowledge and the ability to think and interpret that knowledge
• Affective: the development of traits such as individual values, appreciations, attitudes, and interests

The elementary level PE program provides a wide range of learning experiences including large muscles and vigorous activities featuring locomotor and non-locomotor skills. These activities emphasize self-expression, cooperation, coordination, and body awareness in a variety of media using creativity, strength, endurance, flexibility, agility, balance, and spatial awareness.

The middle school PE program continues to provide skill development in a more advanced and broader range of activities. It highlights challenging activities to develop interpersonal relationships, team-oriented activities to sharpen social skills, and fitness and wellness at a time of rapid physical and social growth.
