Student Life
At the heart of Mason Prep's Mission Statement is our commitment to the education of the whole child. We firmly believe an ideal education extends far beyond the confines of classroom walls. Riding horse-drawn carriages through the streets of Charleston, climbing rocks in the North Carolina mountains, volunteering at the Buddy Walk for the Down Syndrome Association, or performing in an adaptation of Shakespeare for children-all are educational activities beyond walls that teach while they delight.
Given that Mason Prep's student government has traditionally been designed on the model of a city; the leader of our student body is known as the mayor and the assistant is the mayor pro tem. Our City Council leads our program of community service, with contributions to local, national, and international causes. In response to the leadership of our founder, Nancy D. Hawk, whose long life defined community service, we encourage our students to live up to her ideal. Mason Prep's location in historic downtown Charleston affords an abundance of learning experiences for students of all grade levels. Our intermediate and middle school students benefit from overnight trips to places ranging from nearby barrier islands to the mountains of North Carolina, culminating in our eighth grade trip to our nation's capital.
Our after-school program involves a rich variety of activities, such as chess, art, and karate, among others. Athletic opportunities also abound across grade levels, including teams in basketball, golf, tennis, and volleyball. In addition to our sports teams, we demonstrate our commitment to the physical development of our students through our cross-curricular emphasis on wellness incorporated into physical education, science, and guidance programs.
Mason Prep's guidance program also focuses on developing respect, integrity, self-discipline, responsibility, and accountability. Students meet in small and large groups with our guidance counselor, who is also available for one-on-one student counseling.
The education of mind, body, and character is evident every day at Mason Prep. The scope of student life reflects our commitment to a rich and varied learning experience for every student.
