Mrs. Ashton Milleman

Mrs. Milleman is one of our 5th and 6th grade language arts teachers as well as a 6th grade homeroom teacher.
Why did you become a teacher?
Unlike many of my colleagues, I did not grow up dreaming of becoming a teacher. As a child, I dreamt of being a veterinarian and prepared for that career choice throughout high school. While in undergraduate college, I took a Foundations of Education course as an elective. I fell in love with the idea of making a difference in the lives of many children by empowering them to realize their full potential.

Why do you teach at Mason Prep?
The best part of teaching at Mason Prep is the students! Our students are kind, intelligent, conscientious, and curious. I enjoy teaching in a nurturing environment where everyone is family, expectations are high, curriculum is challenging, and good citizenship is paramount.

What is the most important life lesson that you want your students to take from your subject area or grade level?

My primary goal as the fifth and sixth grade language arts instructor at Mason Prep is to instill a lifelong love of the written word in our students. I consistently model a love of reading and writing by sharing novels I have read and pieces I have written with my students. I want my students leaving the classroom with a love of self-expression and self-exploration through writing and reading.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of school?
Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my Labrador retriever, Bella Luna. We are foodies who savor the local restaurant scene. We love hiking and vacationing in our other favorite city of Asheville, NC. Our current goal is to visit all 47 South Carolina State Parks within 24 months.
