In selecting Dr. Spurrier as the next Head of School for Mason Prep, the Board of Trustees has chosen an experienced educator who, over the course of three decades, has served as the head of multiple pre-K-8 schools, an elementary and middle school teacher, a college instructor and tennis coach, and a consultant for charter and independent schools. Dr. Spurrier holds a Doctorate in Education from the University of New England, a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Central Michigan University, Master’s and Bachelor degrees in Communication from Towson University, and certificates in Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education as well as a Certificate in School Management and Leadership from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and Harvard Business School. Most recently, in 2019 Dr. Spurrier was among a select group of international school leaders awarded a Klingenstein Fellowship to attend Columbia University’s Heads of Schools Program through its Teachers College.
Prior to his current role as the Interim Head of School at the Honolulu Waldorf School, a pre-school to grade 12 independent school, Dr. Spurrier served as the Head of School at Holy Nativity School in Honolulu, a co-ed pre-K to grade 8 independent school with 280 students that added its seventh and eighth grades under his leadership. Earlier in his career, Dr. Spurrier founded and served as Head of School for the Waimea Country School, a K-8 school in Kamuela, Hawaii and served as the Head of School of the K-8 Mead Hall in Aiken, South Carolina. An experienced teacher, Dr. Spurrier also has served as a second and third grade teacher, a performing arts teacher for grades K-6, a college instructor teaching public speaking and English, and a collegiate tennis coach.
