Technology at Mason Prep: A Balanced Approach That Prepares Students for the Future

We have noticed that one of the questions that comes up again and again during our campus tours is this: How does the school approach technology? Parents want to know that their children will be prepared for a digital world, but they also want reassurance that screens will not replace meaningful teaching, human interaction, and hands-on learning.
At Mason Prep, we take a thoughtful and balanced approach to technology. Our goal is simple. We want students to become capable, responsible users of technology while ensuring that it never replaces the core elements of a strong education.

Technology as a Tool, Not the Teacher
Research increasingly shows that technology is most effective in education when it supports strong instruction rather than attempting to replace it. Studies have found that digital tools can deepen learning when they are used to enhance discussion, collaboration, and problem solving. However, excessive screen time or poorly integrated technology can distract from the learning process.

This research aligns closely with Mason Prep’s philosophy. A phrase you will often hear here is, “We use technology to reinforce, not to introduce.” In other words, our teachers lead the learning experience first through discussion, exploration, writing, reading, and hands-on activities. Technology may then be used to deepen understanding, practice skills, or explore ideas in new ways. This balanced approach allows students to build strong academic foundations while also developing the digital skills they will need later in their academic careers.

Limiting Exposure, Not Maximizing Screen Time
At Mason Prep, access to technology is carefully managed, filtered, and age appropriate. We intentionally limit exposure and introduce technology gradually. Younger students experience guided exposure to technology. Teachers remain very hands-on, ensuring that devices are used for specific learning activities and for limited periods of time. As students grow older, they gradually gain more independence with technology while still operating within a structured and supportive framework.

Technology by Grade Level
Technology access grows thoughtfully as students move through the grades.
• Our Pre-K students do not use individual devices because we want their learning to center on discovery, creativity, and meaningful interaction with teachers and classmates.
• In Kindergarten through second grade, each classroom has a set of iPads. These devices are used in small, purposeful ways, many times as part of learning stations or rotations. For example, students may use an iPad to take an Accelerated Reader quiz while other classmates work on writing activities or math manipulatives.
• Beginning in third grade, students receive their own Chromebook. Third grade Chromebooks include touch screens and allow students to begin building familiarity with digital tools. Third and fourth grade students also learn keyboarding skills.
• In fourth through sixth grade, students have 1:1 Chromebooks with keyboards as academic tools while becoming more responsible for managing their devices.
• By seventh and eighth grade, students have Chromebooks that they may take home for homework. At this stage, students are developing the digital independence they will need in high school while still operating within the structure and supervision that Mason Prep provides.
• Throughout the school, classrooms are equipped with state-of-the-art Promethean boards. These interactive boards allow teachers to project content, write on the screen, and invite students to interact directly with lessons. Instead of passively watching a presentation, students actively participate in the learning process.

A Cell Phone Free Campus
One of the clearest ways we protect our learning environment is by maintaining a cell phone and smart watch free campus. If students bring these devices to school, they are turned off and given to the teacher at the start of the day and returned at dismissal. This policy helps eliminate distractions and encourages students to be fully present in their classrooms, with their peers, and in conversations with their teachers.

Built In Safety and Oversight
Just as important as providing technology is ensuring that it is used safely. Mason Prep has strong guardrails in place to protect students while helping them learn to make good decisions online.

All technology access is filtered and monitored through school managed systems. Teachers use a program called GoGuardian to oversee student devices during class. This allows teachers to control which websites students can access while completing research or assignments. For example, a teacher may limit research sources to reliable academic materials rather than open sources like Wikipedia. This helps students learn how to evaluate credible information.

If a student attempts to access inappropriate content, administrators are automatically notified. This allows the school to address the situation quickly and use it as a learning opportunity about responsible technology use. GoGuardian also includes a feature called Beacon, which helps monitor student safety. If a student searches for content related to bullying or self-harm, administrators and our School Psychologist receive an alert so that the school can respond quickly and provide support.

Our network systems are also configured to comply with important student protection standards including FERPA, COPPA, and CIPA.

Teaching Digital Responsibility
Our School Psychologist plays an important role in this work. She leads classroom lessons about digital citizenship, internet safety, and responsible social media use. Students learn how their online behavior can affect others and how to make thoughtful choices in digital environments.

Parents are also included in this conversation. The School Psychologist regularly hosts book talks and discussions that help families navigate the challenges of raising children in a world where technology and social media are everywhere.

Preparing Students for High School and Beyond
By the time Mason Prep students graduate, they are well prepared to use technology effectively in high school. They know how to research responsibly, manage digital tools, type efficiently, and collaborate online. Just as importantly, they understand that technology is not the center of learning. It is one of many tools that can support curiosity, creativity, and problem solving.

In short, our approach reflects the values that guide everything we do at Mason Prep. We focus on what matters most. Thoughtful teaching. Engaged students. Strong relationships. And technology used wisely to support it all.
