Every grade at Mason Prep completes a community service project over the school year.
Each grade chooses a project, and teachers weave the work and lessons learned from these projects through areas of study. Students explore the issues and challenges around their project, as well as the impact of their efforts, more fully than is typical with more traditional community service initiatives. Students come to understand that they are part of a larger community and they learn that they can make a difference.
Recent projects include:
Kindergarten
Our kindergarteners spread holiday cheer by supporting Toys for Tots this year. In class, they explored the meaning of kindness and giving and were so proud to select special gifts with their families. It was a sweet and simple way to show our youngest Knights how their actions can make a positive impact on our community and bring joy to others.
First Grade
First graders helped the Ronald McDonald House, visiting the house early in the year to learn about the organization and its mission to support families with children receiving hospital care. Throughout the year, first graders collected pop tabs, which the organization can exchange for money at local recycling facilities. In April, the Penguins and Toucans organized a school-wide pop tab collection, with the winning homeroom collecting an impressive 14 pounds of pop tabs! In addition to the pop tab drive, students created holiday-themed door decorations throughout the year to help bring a little extra warmth and cheer to the families staying at the house.
Second Grade
Each October, second graders collect colorful and fun band-aids for the MUSC Children’s Hospital through their “Boo to the Boo Boos” project. This activity helps them build empathy by imagining life from the perspective of children who are experiencing long-term hospital stays. A nurse at the hospital (and Mason Prep parent) reports that the kids truly love receiving these bright and cheerful band-aids!
In the spring, students turned their attention to sea turtles. After a visit from the Hilton Head Sea Patrol, they launched a "Love the Loggerheads" read-a-thon, raising funds for the South Carolina Aquarium’s Sea Turtle Hospital. A virtual visit to the rehabilitation center made this service project even more meaningful!
Third Grade
Third grade students shared their love of reading with residents at Bishop Gadsden. After choosing some of their favorite books and practicing reading aloud at home, they spent time reading to residents and getting to know them. Students were very respectful and felt proud of the time they spent there. It was a heartwarming experience that left both students and residents smiling.
Fourth Grade
Fourth graders took the initiative this year by designing their own fundraisers to support Lowcountry Orphan Relief. From lemonade stands and bake sales to extra chores or lawnmowing jobs, students found creative ways to raise money to buy much-needed items from the organization’s “Top Needs” wish list. The students were proud to see their donations collected for delivery, knowing they had made a difference by giving their time to support others in our community.
Fifth Grade
The fifth graders participated in Meals on Wheels three times over the course of the year. They followed different routes across the Lowcountry, personally delivering meals and brightening the day of each recipient. Through this experience, the students discovered how rewarding it is to help those in need.
Sixth Grade
Sixth grade partnered with Water Mission, raising both funds and awareness for the global water crisis. Students organized creative activities—from game nights and bake sales to sports challenges and art sales. They learned a powerful lesson in empathy and saw firsthand how their efforts could change lives by providing safe drinking water to those in need. Mason Prep families also joined the Charleston community in the Walk for Water, a hands-on way to support Water Mission’s work around the globe. Participants carried buckets of water over three miles, simulating the daily journey millions make to access clean water. Through all of these efforts, Team Mason Prep raised over $7,500 for this vital cause.
Seventh Grade
Seventh grade students had the opportunity to serve our community through Meals on Wheels deliveries. As they brought meals to homes around the Lowcountry, they learned just how meaningful a small gesture can be and took pride in brightening someone’s day.
Eighth Grade
Eighth graders combined creativity and compassion in their project supporting Pet Helpers. Using recycled materials, they made toys and enrichment items for the animals in InDI class, then visited the shelter to learn more about its mission and programming and to deliver the donations. Time spent reading to dogs and visiting with cats made the experience especially memorable (and fun) for our students.
